AUGUST 29 News Update Several items to make you aware of: 1. The www.StrengthsAndWeaknesses.org now has a page with information on how to contact your State Board of Education (SBOE) members. Please check it, locate your SBOE member, and contact them (phone, fax, snail mail, email) and let them know that you support teaching both scientific strengths AND weaknesses of evolutionary theories and hypotheses, as required by TEKS 3A. Even if you think your SBOE member is with us, please contact them and encourage them! The contact list is located at: http://www.strengthsandweaknesses.org/State.Board.of.Education.Contact.Info.htm 2. Our site also now has a press release archive page. It is located at: http://www.strengthsandweaknesses.org/press_archive.htm 3. Those of you in the Tyler area should note that the video “Icons of Evolution” will air in the wee hours of the morning Sept 2, 2003. Based on the best-selling book by cell biologist Jonathan Wells, this documentary examines the state of science education in the public school classroom and textbooks, traveling around the world to show how new research is undermining the classic "icons of evolution." Follow the story of Roger DeHart, a Washington State biology teacher whose school district intervenes to prevent him from teaching the weaknesses of Darwinian theory. Hear from leading scientists, domestic and foreign, as they explain how the most famous "proofs" of Darwinian evolution in science education are misleading, overstated or outright false -- with the full knowledge of the mainstream scientific establishment." In a related vein, the outstanding video “Unlocking the Mysteries of Life” is now available to all PBS member stations, and has been shown in several markets around Texas and the nation already. Contact your local one about showing it in your area. 4. The SBOE meeting in Austin is rapidly approaching. Numerous people on both sides are signed up to testify. Even if you are not one of those, you might plan on attending this historic public meeting. It is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm in Austin. More details will be on the website soon. Especially those of you in the Austin area, please make plans to be there and support our efforts. 5. Please keep a vigilant watch over how your local papers and radio and television news departments are covering this issue. Write letters to the editors and contact your local SBOE members regarding this. If you do not, it will not get done. 6. Last, we continue to need assistance in a variety of areas, ranging from English to Spanish translation for our mirror site in Spanish to helping with a hospitality room in Austin on September 10. Please check our ‘needs’ list at the upper right of the web site to see if you can help out in some way. Please do your part! This is a grass roots effort, and all of us are unpaid volunteers. If you think of a way to promote this effort, take it upon yourself to do it! Both spreading the word to your family and friends and contacting your SBOE member are critical to our success. Please take a minute and make the phone call now. Thank you. Texans
